For Danielle Fishel, who played the iconic Topanga Lawrence, the transition was especially challenging. The actress recently reflected on the difficult period that followed the sitcom’s finale. She admitted that the year after Boy Meets World ended was “not a fun year” for her.
Danielle Fishel Took a Break From Acting
Fishel discussed her post-Boy Meets World career during an episode of Pod Meets World. She explained that she did not want to audition for new projects immediately after the sitcom ended.
“That year was not a fun year,” Fishel recalled. She also said that she did not want to revisit that period of her life.
At the time, Fishel had spent seven seasons playing Topanga. The character started as Cory’s unusual and outspoken classmate. She eventually became Cory’s girlfriend and wife. After spending so many years with the role, taking time away from acting made sense.
Fishel also revealed that she was recovering from a “very bad, unhealthy relationship” when the show ended. The combination of personal and professional changes made the transition even harder.

The End of Boy Meets World Changed Everything
Fishel was only 19 and approaching 20 when Boy Meets World ended. Her career situation also changed because her longtime agent primarily represented child actors.
As Fishel entered adulthood, she needed different representation. She explained that she and her agent eventually put her career on hold. Later, she signed with Innovative’s Young Talent department, which helped her pursue new opportunities.
The transition was not easy. Fishel had spent most of her childhood working in television. Suddenly, she had to figure out where she wanted her career to go next.
She has also previously admitted that the final years of Boy Meets World became complicated for her. At the time, she wanted the series to end. Looking back, however, she remains grateful for the experience.
Other Boy Meets World Stars Faced Career Changes
Fishel was not the only cast member who struggled to find a clear direction after the show ended.
Rider Strong, who played Shawn Hunter, took a different path. After the series finale, he traveled to Spain with a friend. He later appeared in the independent film Buck Naked Arson. Strong eventually moved to New York and studied at Columbia University.
Will Friedle also continued acting after playing Eric Matthews. He joined the NBC sitcom Go Fish, although the series did not last long. Friedle has since said that he wishes he had taken a break from acting after Boy Meets World.

Danielle Fishel Eventually Found a New Path
Fishel’s career eventually moved forward. In 2014, she returned as Topanga for Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World. The spinoff ran for three seasons and introduced Topanga and Cory’s family to a new generation.
Fishel also expanded her career beyond acting. She became a podcast host and explored other entertainment opportunities. In 2025, she competed on the 34th season of Dancing with the Stars. She finished the competition in eighth place.
Her latest project continues that momentum. Fishel is set to appear with members of The Sandlot cast in the comedy YouTube series Dugout Dads. The series premieres on August 26.
