The debate over superhero fatigue has been going on for years, but Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani believes the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day offers an important reminder: audiences may not be tired of superhero movies after all. Instead, viewers may simply be waiting for films that give them a reason to return to theaters.
Speaking on the Revenge Of podcast, Vellani discussed the response to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and what its impressive box office performance could mean for the future of superhero cinema.
According to Vellani, audiences were ready to support the latest Marvel Studios Spider-Man adventure. She argued that the idea of superhero fatigue may have been overstated, particularly when a major release delivers the kind of experience audiences genuinely want to see.
Iman Vellani Challenges the Superhero Fatigue Debate
Vellani, who last appeared as Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, in 2023’s The Marvels, suggested that audiences are often too quick to assume that a new movie will fail.
Her comments point to a larger issue affecting Hollywood. Superhero films once dominated the global box office, but several recent releases have struggled to match the enormous commercial success of earlier Marvel and DC projects.
However, Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears to be an important exception.
The movie reportedly attracted huge audiences during its opening weekend, setting a new domestic box office benchmark and surpassing the previous record associated with Avengers: Endgame. Its strong performance has also placed it on course for an enormous worldwide total.
For Vellani, that response demonstrates that audiences have not necessarily abandoned superhero stories.
Instead, she believes viewers can still recognize and support a genuinely exciting movie.

Why Spider-Man Remains a Major Box Office Draw
There is little doubt that Spider-Man remains one of the most popular superheroes in modern entertainment. The character has successfully connected with multiple generations of moviegoers, helping make each new theatrical adventure a major event.
That popularity could explain why Spider-Man: Brand New Day has performed differently from some recent superhero releases.
The film benefits from the established popularity of the character, the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe and the anticipation surrounding the next chapter of Spider-Man’s story. These factors can create excitement even during a period when audiences appear more selective about which franchise movies they watch in theaters.
The success also suggests that recognizable characters alone may not be enough. Audiences could be looking for stories that feel entertaining, meaningful and worth experiencing on the big screen.
Is Superhero Fatigue Really Over?
Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day has delivered a major box office result, it may be too early to declare the end of superhero fatigue.
Recent releases have produced mixed results. Some superhero movies received positive reviews but struggled to generate the same level of audience excitement seen during the peak of the Marvel era. Other major comic-book projects have also faced disappointing theatrical performances.
That means Marvel Studios still has plenty to prove.
The studio has several major projects planned for the coming years, including new Avengers and X-Men movies, Black Panther 3 and a Ghost Rider project starring Ryan Gosling. These films will provide a much broader test of whether audiences remain interested in superhero entertainment.

Marvel’s Next Big Test
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is approaching its 20th anniversary, making its next phase particularly important. The studio must find ways to maintain audience interest while introducing new characters and continuing stories that have been running for years.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day may have demonstrated that superhero fatigue is not necessarily permanent. Instead, audiences could simply be more selective than they were a decade ago.
If Marvel can consistently deliver movies that generate the same excitement as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the superhero genre could remain a major force at the box office.
For now, Vellani’s argument is straightforward: audiences are not automatically tired of superheroes. They are willing to show up when a movie gives them something they truly want to see.
And if Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its impressive theatrical run, it could become one of the strongest arguments yet against the idea that superhero movies have lost their appeal.
