Kathie Lee Gifford has shared an emotional update about the serious health challenges she has faced over the past year. The beloved television personality, actress, and singer revealed that chronic physical pain became so overwhelming that she prayed to “go home to Jesus.”
The 72-year-old opened up in a candid interview with PEOPLE, explaining how months of severe pain forced her to step away from public appearances. During that difficult period, she underwent a total hip replacement, cataract surgery, and dealt with broken bones that made everyday life incredibly challenging.
Gifford admitted that the constant pain affected her physically and emotionally. Although she never considered harming herself, she said there were moments when she wished her suffering would end.
“I wasn’t going to hurt myself. I wasn’t going to kill myself. I just didn’t want to be here—as blessed as I am,” she said.
The television icon explained that she often prayed, saying, “Lord, if this is all you have left for me, I want to go home.” Her faith remained central throughout her recovery, even during the darkest moments.
Kathie Lee Gifford Compared Her Experience to Frank Gifford’s Final Years
Kathie Lee said her struggles reminded her of her late husband, NFL legend and broadcaster Frank Gifford, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 84.
She recalled a conversation they shared before his death. Frank told her that whenever he appeared in public, he wanted people to remember him as they always had. Kathie Lee said she now understands that feeling more than ever.
According to Gifford, chronic pain changes everything. She explained that when someone is constantly hurting, even simple facial expressions become difficult to control. She wanted people to see the energetic Kathie Lee they knew, not someone overwhelmed by pain.

Multiple Surgeries and Injuries Changed Her Daily Life
The past year has been filled with medical challenges for Gifford. In addition to her hip replacement, she underwent cataract surgery and suffered broken bones that further limited her mobility.
These health issues affected more than just her career. They also impacted precious family moments with her five grandchildren.
She shared that she could no longer carry them, run around with them, or play as she once did. Instead, she spent time sitting with them, singing songs and writing playful tunes together.
While she cherished those moments, she admitted that losing her physical independence was heartbreaking.
Years of Performing May Have Contributed to Her Health Problems
Looking back, Gifford believes decades of performing may have taken a toll on her body.
She specifically remembered starring as Miss Hannigan in the 2006 production of Annie at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. During those performances, she frequently performed pratfalls and other physically demanding movements.
Gifford said she always wanted children in the audience to clearly see her performance, so she made every action as big as possible.
Reflecting on her long career, she expressed surprise that her body had held up for so many years.
“I’ve never abused my body,” she said. “I just used it.”
