DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation have announced three major animated projects at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The new lineup includes Absolute Batman, Joker: Laugh Riot, and an untitled Krypto series. The announcement highlights DC’s growing commitment to animation as a key pillar of its expanding universe.
Warner Bros. Animation President Sam Register joined DC Studios Co-CEO Peter Safran during the presentation. Together, they revealed fresh details about upcoming productions and shared their vision for the future of DC animation.
Absolute Batman Heads to Television
The biggest surprise of the event was the announcement of the Absolute Batman animated series. The project adapts the bestselling comic created by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta.
Unlike traditional Batman stories, Absolute Batman presents a radically different version of Bruce Wayne. This interpretation removes the billionaire lifestyle and focuses on a working-class hero who battles corruption, power, and injustice across Gotham City.
Scott Snyder will serve as executive producer and showrunner, while Nick Dragotta joins the project as a producer. Warner Bros. Animation confirmed that the series will use full CG animation and feature a unique tone that differs from previous Batman adaptations.
Why Absolute Batman Has Fans Excited

Krypto Gets His Own Animated Adventure
DC also revealed plans for an untitled animated series centered on Krypto the Superdog. The project is being developed by animation veteran C.H. Greenblatt.
The story follows Krypto as he spends time with a group of inexperienced criminal wannabes living nearby. While their plans often go wrong, Krypto’s good-hearted nature gradually influences them and pushes them toward better choices.
Executives described the show as funny, chaotic, and filled with heart. The announcement arrives as Krypto’s popularity continues to rise thanks to his appearances in recent Superman-related projects.

Animation Plays a Bigger Role in the DC Universe
Peter Safran emphasized that animation remains a vital part of DC Studios’ long-term strategy. He explained that the company wants to tell stories across multiple genres, styles, and age groups.
DC has already demonstrated this approach through projects such as Creature Commandos. Characters introduced in animation can later appear in live-action productions while keeping the same actors and continuity.
