Actress and singer Jamie Lynn Spears is sharing one of the most emotional chapters of her life. In a recent interview with PEOPLE magazine, Jamie Lynn and her daughter Maddie reflected on the devastating ATV accident in 2017 that nearly took Maddie’s life.
The Sweet Magnolias star revealed that the terrifying incident remains one of the hardest experiences their family has ever faced. At the time, Maddie was only 8 years old when a routine ride on an ATV turned into a life-threatening emergency.
The Day Everything Changed
According to Jamie Lynn Spears, the accident happened at their family property in Fluker, Louisiana. While riding an ATV, Maddie suddenly made a sharp turn and drove into a pond.
Although family members were nearby and watching her, they still do not know exactly what caused the sudden movement.
“We were watching her, and we still don’t quite know if she was dodging a dog or what it was,” Jamie Lynn explained.
As soon as the ATV entered the water, Jamie Lynn, her husband Jamie Watson, and her father-in-law rushed toward the pond. Unfortunately, Maddie became trapped underneath the overturned vehicle.
Meanwhile, Jamie Lynn’s mother-in-law immediately called emergency services. First responders arrived within minutes and worked quickly to free Maddie from beneath the ATV.

A Parent’s Worst Nightmare
When rescuers finally pulled Maddie from the water, the situation looked grim.
“At that point, she was not breathing. We thought that she had passed,” Jamie Lynn recalled.
Thankfully, a firefighter soon announced that Maddie had a pulse. Shortly afterward, she was airlifted to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
However, the battle was far from over. Maddie remained in a coma for two days, and her condition was so serious that a priest was called to administer last rites.
For Jamie Lynn, those moments were filled with fear, uncertainty, and prayer.
A Recovery Described as a Miracle
One of the most unforgettable moments occurred when the priest visited Maddie’s hospital room.
Jamie Lynn recalled that while everyone feared the worst, Maddie suddenly sat up despite being connected to medical tubes and restraints.
The actress immediately called for doctors, while even the priest expressed amazement at what he had witnessed.
Jamie Lynn believes faith played a major role in her daughter’s recovery. Looking back, she describes Maddie’s survival as nothing short of a miracle.
“I knew she was in there and felt all of us praying,” Jamie Lynn said.
How the Accident Strengthened Their Faith
Although Maddie has no memory of the accident itself, she believes the experience changed her family forever.
“I feel like our faith got a lot stronger,” Maddie shared. “In the end, I think such a negative experience affected us positively.”
Furthermore, the frightening ordeal helped her appreciate life in a completely new way. Seeing family, friends, and supporters rally around her showed just how loved and fortunate she was.
As a result, Maddie says she became more grateful for every day she gets to experience.

The Promise That Led to a New Family Member
Before the accident, Maddie had often asked her mother for a younger sibling.
During Maddie’s hospitalization, Jamie Lynn remembers desperately praying and promising anything if her daughter could recover.
In a surprising moment after waking from her coma, Maddie reminded her mother about the sibling she had always wanted.
A few months later, Jamie Lynn became pregnant with her second daughter, Ivey, who was born in 2018.
Today, the family often jokes that Maddie “went up to heaven to pick out her little sister.”
Maddie’s Bright Future
Nearly a decade after the accident, Maddie has made a remarkable recovery. She is now preparing to attend the University of Southern Mississippi, where she plans to study health sciences and play collegiate softball.
