William Shatner is proving that age does not have to define a person’s lifestyle. At 95, the legendary actor remains active, energetic and focused on work, horses and live performances. In several recent interviews, Shatner explained that he has no interest in retirement and wants to keep living life at full speed.
The iconic “Star Trek” star told reporters that staying busy is the key to maintaining energy and purpose. According to Shatner, many people slow down too early in life, which causes them to feel older faster. He believes movement, work and passion help people remain mentally and physically alive.
Shatner’s Philosophy on Aging and Pain
Shatner introduced what he jokingly calls “Shatner’s law.” His philosophy is simple: keep moving, work harder and do not let pain stop you from living. The actor admitted that aging brings more physical discomfort, but he chooses to accept it instead of fearing it.
He shared advice from a weightlifter who once told him to “make the hurt your friend.” Shatner now applies that idea to his own life. He encourages older adults to “befriend the pain” instead of allowing discomfort to control their daily routine.
The veteran actor explained that if people stop moving completely, pain becomes the center of their lives. For that reason, he continues to stay active every day, even if he has to slow down physically.
Horse Riding Remains a Major Part of His Life
One of Shatner’s greatest passions is horseback riding. He still competes in reining, a physically demanding equestrian sport that requires balance, control and strength. Although getting on a horse has become more difficult with age, he refuses to quit.
Shatner explained that he now uses a mounting block to help him climb onto his horses. Despite suffering a shoulder injury from a previous fall, he continues riding regularly because he feels stopping would remove an important part of his life.
The actor is also preparing to host the annual William Shatner’s Hollywood Charity Horse Show later this month. His continued involvement in equestrian events reflects his determination to remain productive and connected to the activities he loves.
“The Universe is Absurd” Live Show With Neil deGrasse Tyson
Shatner’s busy schedule also includes an upcoming live stage production called “The Universe is Absurd.” The unscripted show will feature conversations between Shatner and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills on May 19 and 20.
The two first became friends while recording an audiobook together. Their project led to nearly 20 hours of conversation, which inspired the idea for a live performance focused on cosmic themes, storytelling and debate.
Shatner said the energy of the show will come from disagreement and spontaneous discussion. He joked that the worst possible outcome would be audience members leaving during the performance, but he remains excited about the event.

Appreciating Life More With Age
Shatner explained that his perspective on life changed dramatically as he grew older. In his younger years, he focused mostly on career goals and personal ambition. However, reaching his 70s and 80s helped him develop a deeper appreciation for nature, existence and everyday moments.
He now believes older people notice “the magic of the Earth” more clearly. According to Shatner, life passes quickly, so people should enjoy every moment while they can.
The actor also admitted that hearing his actual age still feels surreal to him. He said he often feels much younger internally and sometimes cannot believe he is 95 years old.
