Being born into the British royal family comes with enormous expectations. For Prince George, those expectations are even greater because he is expected to become king one day.
As the eldest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Prince George has a unique place in the royal family. However, his parents appear determined to make sure that his future role does not prevent him from enjoying a relatively normal childhood.
Prince William Wants Prince George to Feel Proud of His Future
Prince William has spoken openly about his hopes for Prince George and the kind of future he wants to create for his eldest son.
During an appearance on The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy, William acknowledged that preparing George for life as a future monarch comes with plenty to consider.
The Prince of Wales said he wants to create a world where his son can be proud of what the family does. More importantly, he hopes George will eventually have a role that positively affects people’s lives.
That approach reflects William’s own experiences growing up in the royal spotlight. Both William and his younger brother, Prince Harry, experienced intense public attention from an early age.
William has previously indicated that he does not want George to experience some of the difficulties that he and Harry faced during their childhood.
Prince George Could Follow in His Father’s Footsteps
In some ways, Prince George is already following a familiar royal path.
The young royal is expected to attend Eton College, the prestigious school previously attended by both Prince William and Prince Harry. His education will likely play an important role in preparing him for the responsibilities that could eventually come with the crown.
However, William and Kate appear to be taking a careful approach.
While George will have many traditional royal responsibilities, his parents reportedly want him to experience ordinary childhood moments as well. They are trying to give their children space to develop their own personalities away from the constant expectations surrounding the monarchy.
That balance could become increasingly important as George grows older.
Prince George Still Does Not Have His Own Phone
One example of William and Kate’s efforts to maintain a normal childhood involves technology.
George, who is now a teenager, reportedly does not yet have his own mobile phone. William acknowledged that the decision is becoming more difficult as his son gets older.
Like many parents, the Prince of Wales appears to be navigating the challenge of deciding when a child should receive their first phone.
For George, however, the decision carries an additional layer of complexity because almost every part of his life attracts public interest.
George, Charlotte and Louis Have Different Musical Tastes
Despite their royal status, the three Wales children appear to have very different personalities.
Kate Middleton previously revealed that Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have different musical preferences.
Charlotte is reportedly a fan of Taylor Swift, while George prefers rock music. His love of rock reportedly includes legendary band AC/DC, and he has even taken an interest in playing guitar.
Louis, meanwhile, has his own favorite music and has also shown an interest in drums. William has described his youngest son as a talented drummer.
These small details offer a glimpse into the everyday family life of the Wales children.
A Glimpse of George’s Childhood
George has also shown that, despite his future position, he can enjoy many of the same experiences as other young people.
When William, Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis met Taylor Swift backstage during her Eras Tour in London in 2024, George appeared happy to be part of the special family moment.
For the young royal, these experiences may become increasingly valuable as he grows older.
Prince George’s future as king will undoubtedly bring enormous responsibility. Yet Prince William and Kate Middleton seem focused on ensuring that their son has time to grow, discover his interests and develop his own identity.
The challenge will be finding the right balance between preparing Prince George for his future as king and allowing him to simply enjoy being a teenager.
For now, the future monarch appears to be growing up with a mixture of royal tradition and everyday family life — a balance his parents are determined to protect.
