Evangeline Lilly has revealed that she has been diagnosed with brain damage following a serious beach accident in Hawaii, an injury that doctors say has reduced functioning across most areas of her brain. The Ant-Man and Lost star shared the health update in a candid Instagram video posted at the start of 2026, offering fans insight into her ongoing recovery from a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
The 46-year-old actor explained that the injury traces back to an accident in May 2025, when she suddenly fainted during a holiday in Hawaii and struck her head on a boulder.
What Happened to Evangeline Lilly in Hawaii
Lilly said she lost consciousness while walking on a beach and fell forward, hitting her face directly on a rock. The impact caused significant facial injuries, including deep cuts that required stitches between her nose and upper lip, along with wounds to her chin.
Medical staff treated her injuries immediately. Doctors also focused on identifying the cause of her blackout, rather than only addressing the visible wounds. At the time, Lilly believed doctors would not find anything serious beyond the concussion.
Months later, follow-up neurological scans told a different story.

“Almost Every Area of My Brain Is Functioning at a Reduced Capacity”
In her video, recorded on January 1, 2026, Lilly spoke openly about the scan results and their emotional impact.
“The results came back from the scan, and almost every area in my brain is functioning at a decreased capacity,” she said.
Doctors confirmed that she has brain damage caused by a traumatic brain injury, with possible additional contributing factors still under review. Lilly said she is now working closely with her medical team to fully understand the extent of the damage.
“I do have brain damage from the TBI and possibly other factors going on,” she explained. “My job now is to get to the bottom of that with my doctors.”
Living With Cognitive Decline After a Concussion
Lilly described noticeable cognitive decline, including slower thinking and reduced mental stamina. She directly linked these changes to the head injury she sustained during the fall.
“My cognitive decline is because I smashed my face open,” she said, adding that the experience has forced her to slow down.
While she admitted that rehabilitation will require significant effort, Lilly also shared an unexpected positive outcome. The injury changed how she approaches work, rest, and family life.
She revealed that she experienced the most restful Christmas holiday she has had since becoming a mother. Lilly has two sons, born in 2011 and 2015.
Gratitude Despite a Difficult Diagnosis
Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, Lilly emphasized gratitude rather than fear. She told fans she remains thankful for her life and the ability to continue moving forward.
“I’m still feeling extraordinarily grateful and blessed to be able to play for one more day, one more year on this beautiful living planet,” she said.
She ended the video by thanking supporters for their concern and encouragement.
Previous Fainting Spells and Health History
Lilly first shared details of the accident publicly in May 2025 through a Substack post. She included photographs showing stitches and facial injuries from the fall.
In that post, she also revealed a long-standing history of fainting spells dating back to childhood. Doctors previously diagnosed her with hypoglycaemia, a condition linked to low blood sugar levels that can cause dizziness or loss of consciousness.
She noted that hospital staff focused heavily on determining why she fainted, rather than assuming the fall was an isolated incident.
Evangeline Lilly’s Career and Personal Shift
Born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Lilly worked as a flight attendant and model before landing her breakout role as Kate Austen on Lost. The series ran for six seasons, earned global success, and brought her a Golden Globe nomination.
After Lost, she appeared in award-winning and blockbuster films, including The Hurt Locker, The Hobbit trilogy, and several Marvel Cinematic Universe titles. As Hope van Dyne, also known as the Wasp, she appeared in Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Endgame, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
In recent years, Lilly has spoken openly about stepping back from Hollywood. She has focused on raising her children, writing children’s books, and redefining success on her own terms.
Fans and Colleagues Rally Behind Her
Following her latest update, fans and fellow actors shared messages of support across social media. As Lilly begins the long process of recovery, she continues to reassess how she wants to live and work.
For now, she remains focused on healing, gratitude, and moving forward at a slower, more intentional pace.
