Rose Byrne on Spy Sequel and New Film

Ten years after Spy became one of 2015’s biggest comedy hits, fans are still waiting for news of a sequel. The Paul Feig–directed movie, which starred Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jason Statham, and Jude Law, was both a critical and box office success. Despite its popularity, the long-anticipated follow-up has yet to materialize — and according to Byrne, the wait may continue.

During a recent interview at the New York Film Festival with Entertainment Tonight, Byrne expressed her enthusiasm for returning to the world of Spy, while also acknowledging that plans for a sequel had fizzled out.

“Let’s get it started, I agree,” Byrne said. “I think there was supposed to be one in the works, but it never eventuated. I love that film. It’s been rediscovered more and more. People have come up to me and said, ‘I really love that movie.’ It’s an absolute treasure — such a fun watch. [Jason] Statham’s so funny. And my husband Bobby [Cannavale] is in it — it’s just so funny.”

The 2015 film followed Melissa McCarthy’s character, Susan Cooper, a behind-the-scenes CIA analyst who goes undercover after her partner is killed during a mission. Byrne portrayed the witty and villainous Rayna Boyanov, the arms dealer’s daughter whose arrogance and humor made her a standout character.

When asked whether she had a pitch for Paul Feig, Byrne laughed, saying, “I’m going to get one. Tonight’s the night. I’m going to try to come up with one tonight. That’s going to be my goal.”

Given Spy’s enduring fanbase and the growing popularity of streaming-era revivals, a sequel still feels like a natural next step. Byrne’s continued enthusiasm suggests that if Feig ever revisits the franchise, she would be more than ready to reprise her role.

Byrne’s New Role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You

While fans wait for any updates on Spy 2, Rose Byrne continues to showcase her range with a mix of comedy and drama. The Emmy and Golden Globe–nominated actress recently joined TODAY to discuss her new film, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, where she plays a mother coping with an absent husband and a daughter battling a mysterious illness.

Byrne described the project as one that challenged her emotionally and creatively. The film, blending dark humor with heartfelt family drama, allows her to tap into the complexities of motherhood and resilience.

The film also features comedian Conan O’Brien and rapper A$AP Rocky, two unexpected co-stars that bring unique energy to the screen. “Working with Conan and Rocky was incredible,” Byrne shared. “They both brought such different comedic instincts and heart to the film. It was a really special experience.”

Balancing Stardom and Family Life

Outside her professional life, Byrne continues to collaborate with her real-life partner, actor Bobby Cannavale. The pair have worked together in multiple projects, including Seriously Red and the Spy franchise, and share two children. Byrne noted how she and Cannavale support each other’s creative journeys while balancing family life — something that often influences her choice of roles.

In addition to her acting projects, Byrne recently graced the cover of Vogue Australia, where she discussed authenticity in Hollywood, her career longevity, and the evolving landscape for women in film. Her grounded outlook and comedic flair continue to make her one of Hollywood’s most versatile talents.

What’s Next for Rose Byrne

As Rose Byrne continues to explore complex, character-driven stories like If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, fans remain hopeful that she’ll return to her comedic roots in a Spy sequel. Her enduring charm, quick wit, and dynamic screen presence ensure that audiences will follow her wherever her career leads next — whether in heartfelt indie dramas or high-octane action comedies.

With her signature humor, talent, and drive, Byrne proves once again why she remains one of the most compelling actresses of her generation — and why fans still can’t stop asking, “When is Spy 2 happening?”
