Iris Apatow on Growing Up in Hollywood and Her Role in The Hunger Games

Iris Apatow, 22, is no stranger to Hollywood life. Yet she is still learning how to trust her instincts, both as an actress and a public figure. In late September, she was preparing to fly to the set of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, one of the most anticipated films of 2026. Apatow will play Proserpina Trinket, the younger sister of Effie Trinket, originally played by Elizabeth Banks.

On the day of our interview, she wore a casual sweatshirt with a quirky line from Hulu’s upcoming Tell Me Lies, where she stars as college freshman Amanda. Laughing, she said, “I forgot I was wearing it; I’m so embarrassed.” Her down-to-earth attitude stands out, despite her high-profile career.

A Hollywood Upbringing

Apatow grew up surrounded by fame. Her first role came at age five in her father Judd Apatow’s film Knocked Up. Her mother, Leslie Mann, is an actress, and her sister, Maude Apatow, is a director and actress. Iris also has close friendships with stars like Olivia Rodrigo and lives in New York with boyfriend Sam Nivola, known for White Lotus.

Despite these connections, Apatow knows she must work hard to be taken seriously. “At some point, I want to be respected for my work,” she says.

Learning from Rejection

Rejection is part of acting, and Apatow is learning to handle it. She recalls a recent audition for a romantic comedy. Both she and Nivola tried out, but only he landed the role. “It was hard. I thought, ‘Somebody has better chemistry with my boyfriend than I do,’” she admits.

When auditioning for Sunrise on the Reaping, she doubted her self-tape. She almost ignored a call from her agents, fearing disappointment. The good news—that she got the role—was shocking. “I could not believe it,” she says.

Building Confidence and Ambition

Apatow studied film for two years at USC. She hopes to direct or write her own projects someday. She admires her sister Maude, whose directorial debut Poetic License also stars their mother. “I’m so impressed with her work,” Apatow says.

She feels grateful for her family’s support. Growing up in a protective environment allowed her to explore acting safely.

Social Media and Privacy

Apatow initially shared personal glimpses on social media. She now has nearly 800,000 Instagram followers and 550,000 TikTok fans. Over time, she learned to set boundaries. “I have to take back that power and keep most of my life private,” she says.

She focuses on her work and avoids oversharing. “It’s hard to detach from how people see you. I’ve learned what shouldn’t be out there. But it took time.”

Watching and Learning

Apatow notices young performers making similar mistakes she once made. “It stresses me out,” she admits. “I see people acting how I used to and think, ‘You’ll figure it out later.’” Her self-awareness shows a maturity beyond her years.

Looking Ahead

With roles in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and Hulu’s Tell Me Lies, Apatow is forging her own path while honoring her family’s legacy. Her focus remains on her craft, facing challenges, and protecting her personal life.
